Bespoke Navy Fitted Wardrobes in St Hilary, Cornwall

“Absolutely beautiful wardrobes were made by Jack. He was reliable, informative, thorough and pleasant to have at our premises. The clearing up and attention to detail was a bonus. We would highly recommend anyone to consider him to carry out a project.”

A bold finish with refined details

Designed, built and installed by Down The Lane Workshop, these bespoke fitted wardrobes bring rich navy cabinetry and distinctive brass-and-ceramic handles together in a practical, made-to-measure storage solution.

Painted Hydrofugo board and a carefully planned internal layout give the wardrobes a cohesive finish, combining a strong visual identity with storage designed around the client’s everyday needs.

Storage designed around the details

The brief called for more than simply filling a wall with wardrobes. The internal layout needed to accommodate specific belongings, including a hat box on the top shelf, full-height hanging for longer garments and double-height hanging for shorter items.

By designing the storage around these requirements, I was able to make better use of the available space and create an arrangement suited to the way the client wanted to use it.

Working around the existing lighting

One of the main challenges was achieving enough wardrobe depth for practical storage while retaining the existing ceiling spotlights.

The client wanted to keep the lights in their original positions, so the design had to balance the clearance required around the fittings with the depth needed for useful hanging space. Careful planning allowed the cabinetry to work within these constraints without compromising the overall design.

It’s this kind of detail that makes bespoke cabinetry valuable: the design responds to the room and the client’s requirements, rather than asking them to compromise around standard furniture.

Navy cabinetry with thoughtful details

The deep navy finish gives the wardrobes a confident, rich presence, while the brass fittings and blue-and-white patterned ceramic handles introduce warmth and decorative character.

Small details help bring the whole design together. Walnut plugs conceal screw holes, adding a subtle contrast against the painted navy surfaces while keeping the construction neat and considered.

These touches reflect the approach behind the project: combining practical construction with carefully chosen materials and finishes. The result balances clean lines with traditional decorative details, giving the cabinetry its own distinctive identity.
